Factory seconds?
PostedDecember 30, 2018
I wanted USA made wingtips, that could be re-soled, in the "long-wing" look. I purchased factory second Macneil Dress Wingtip Blucher in walnut, last month - arrival was longer than expected (just under two weeks), but not unreasonable considering the time of year and distance from WI to NEPA.
I have a few miles, a couple coats of their polishes on them, and a pretty scrutinous ongoing inspection - I've been able to determine: 1) left weld was slightly misaligned at the instep on the left shoe, 2) the very top and center point of wingtip is mis-stitched on the right shoe, 3) there were a few errant "long" strings requiring "snip & burn," as well as minor blemishes throughout - on both shoes (considering the lighter shoe color, these blemishes lend a natural character to the shoes, which I find quite appealing). Additionally, I noted the slight "clipping" of the instep corner of both soles I read about in various forums - I assume this is a manufacturer procedure to allow employees to more easily identify shoes as factory second.
The defects I found were negligible. Nobody, I mean nobody, can tell these shoes are factory seconds. They are SHARP, handsome. Even with the defects, they are well crafted, wearing durably...and easily the MOST comfortable, best fitting (true to my military sizing from 1984), and best looking pair of dress shoes I've ever owned.
I used their walnut cream polish and speed polish - I'd recommend those products. However, I'm going to get and try their carnauba wax polish, as I like a deeper, glossier "spit shine" (like I keep on my "mint condition" 29 year old Corcoran Jump Boots).
I give an excellent rating for quality because of the value in knowing, beforehand, I was purchasing shoes that would have defects...and being pleasantly surprised as to how minor those defects were. And, because the shoes are so comfortable.
Stirling Wingtip Boot will be my next purchase - would consider factory second again, but they're not showing as available in my size.

Run Tight in Midsection
PostedDecember 17, 2018
I own McAllister's in black and light brown. Needed an Oxblood shoe for a wedding last year and bought these when marked down. Wore them to the wedding, assuming they'd break in over time like other shoes. Havent worn them out since but on rug in home (in attempt to get comfortable to wear to work all day), still uncomfortable and tight in the middle of the foot. My bad feet don't help - not sure if the leather, fit, or specific shoe but I really cant wear them without pain - otherwise love your products. Do help if you would be so kind.

Response from allenedmonds.comBy Allen Edmonds Customer ServiceDecember 21, 2018
Thank you for writing a review. Squeaking sometimes occurs on new shoes because Allen Edmonds uses authentic leathers such as calf skin.  When two pieces of new leather rub against each other, such as the leather lining, upper leather and /or tongue leathers, a slight squeaking may occur.  The fix is usually quite simple; general wear will eliminate the noise or you can apply leather lotion as a lubricant.  Lotion can be found at AllenEdmonds.com, most shoe shine stands or simply visit an Allen Edmonds store and have a store associate apply the lotion for you.

Importantly, if you have any further concerns or needs please contact our customer service team at 877-817-7615.
