This stuff is great and is basically just salicylic acid. If you need something just to TREAT your acne, this is the stuff for you.
It's not very expensive for how much you get, and it doesn't have a lot of fillers like a lot of the other products out there.
Many people have their skin dry out from SA - if you are one of those people, this is still going to do that. I don't think there's anything you could add to SA that would negate the drying action, but if you WANT to dry out the acne, this will work really well for you.
I use a q-tip to put it on my face so I can get it right on the spots and not all over my face (you don't want it on the skin that isn't breaking out) - and I put a fairly heavy amount/coating on each spot. I use it after I use my moisturizer and then I've started adding cortisone on top of that after the SA dries out and sets. I've read that dermatologists will use a needle to shoot cortisone directly into the acne if you go to them, and a topical hydrocortisone works really well if you cannot afford to go get the shots all the time. I might be able to afford it (after all, good skin is really worth the money) but I don't WANT a needle near my face that much! The cortisone is working really well for me, I also put that directly on the spots and nowhere else.
Generally, I like the Kiehl's products. I don't use the whole line, but I do like this and the blue cleanser. I use Cetaphil as my moisturizer. I don't know if it's super awesome as a product, but it is really mild and I need a mild product to help with the drying of my skin. I also use the microdermabrasion product they make and it works really well once a week.
I've gotten some really bad hormonal acne as I turned 40 and have just recently added in Spironolactone which seems to be helping quite a bit. (though it takes a month to see much difference, fair warning!) Everything you read online will tell you that keeping your face clean doesn't stop acne, and that may be true. But I think keeping your face clean and using products like this one helps the acne go away faster once it comes to the surface. If you have hormonal acne (along the outside of your cheeks and chin and forehead is where you usually see that) nothing is really going to make it go away. The best you can hope for is to treat it when it appears and get it to go away as quickly as possible. This product will help with that.
If you are looking for a miracle product to make the acne stop showing up, this isn't going to do that. But then, no topical product will do that. If you have hormonal acne as bad as I do, you have to get an oral medication.
But this will treat the acne that has already appeared and it will help it go away faster. And that's the best you can hope for in a topical product.
For the price, this is the best stuff you can buy to get SA to your face with the minimum of fuss. I highly recommend!
I have a lot of acne medication (a LOT) and this is one of my favorites. My acne is relatively light, but I have a hard time clearing it up. I used this on some tough spots that I'd been dealing with for a week - used it over the weekend and by Monday, they were nearly gone.

The gel dried out my skin and made it peel. I had to stop using it. Not worth the the money.

I've encountered some adult acne as of recently. This helps spots heal within a day of two. Thinking of trying other items for the line.
