Great Shoe
PostedJune 10, 2014
I needed a new pair of walking shoes and decided to splurge on Mephisto. The break-in time of these shoes was practically nothing, and I've been putting about 10 miles a week on them with no complaints. A minor annoyance is these shoes have a very strong fragrance that is sort of leather like and sort of not. I keep waiting for the smell to dissipate, but it has been a month with little change. Even my cedar shoes trees make no difference. But for walking, these shoes are very comfortable, and I'm very pleased.

Prosthe most comfort
ConsMedium width
Great comfort for long walks and all day on your feet. This is the second pair I have like this. When they need repair you can send them back to Mephisto for repair and restore on the leather.

Proshappyfeet, comfortable, dress-casual
ConsMedium width
Bought these at the Chicago Nordstrom from Mr. Line, a very knowledgeable gentlemen who spent quite a bit of time helping me find shoes that fit. That is my greatest problem, finding a shoe that fits properly. Never had any luck with ordering shoes without first trying them on.
Anyhoo, back to the review..
Having spent the better part of a day walking around Chicago, my feet were tired. But from the first time I put these on my feet felt happy. It was like I hadn't even been walking for hours, and that sold me. There was no "new shoe" or "needs breaking in" feeling.
Today I wore them all day at work and even took them out to our walking track (asphalt) and put a good two miles on them. Usually when I get back my feet are tired and hot, but not this time. Felt like I could have taken another couple of laps. This is making me want to try out the Mephisto dress and running shoes.
Fit wise:
These shoes have a generous toe-box (a plus for me) and as such might fit loose for some feet.
The sides are cut low enough they don't bite my anklebone.
The only concern I have is arch support. The standard insole is well designed but my feet are nearly flat. I will probably buy a more supportive insole for the shoes. The insole is replaceable by the way and Mephisto makes several variations. Wouldn't consider this a deal breaker.
I do agree the leather is thin. These will make a good casual shoe for most of the year but you might need a thicker sock in winter.
dress-casual
Bought the black (with grey stripe). If it wasn't for that stripe these could easily pass for a dress shoe and even then the stripe is barely noticeable so you know I'm going to push it. :)

Ok, but not great

Prosstylish cold
ConsMedium width
Comfortable but nowhere near as good as the Idwal that Nordstrom seem to have dropped, though it is more dressy. The Bonito is a straighter shoe than other Mephistos, ie it doesn't curve like a foot does, so if you have sticky out feet these shoes exacerbate the look. The leather, especially at the toe, is much thinner than other styles, so I found I couldn't wear them on a chilly day, though they're great on a hot day.
