My husband has been more and more complaining of lower back pain. As he has gotten older he has gained weight in the stomach and this seems to be contributing to terrible posture none of which is good for your back. We drove about 30 miles to the nearest Nordstrom that had these in stock so that he could try them on. According to the size chart he should wear L based on chest measurement and XL (which is also his usual shirt size) based on stomach measurement. He tried on the XL first and was excited right away that he could feel significant back support. Just in case he then also tried the L but it was far too tight so the recommendation to choose the size that corresponds to the larger range you fall into proved accurate. (He also tried the less expensive "cotton compression" version but it did not have the back support.) He wore this to work the next day and there was a visible difference in how his clothes fit and his posture. He found it comfortable for all day wear and wore it every day all week. For the first time in months he does not have back pain by the time he gets home from work. The support of the tank top helps train him to remember to hold his posture better, and even when he takes the tank off, I see that he is standing straighter and that his posture is improving. We only bought one to try it out but we are now about to buy a second.

This shirt is a good stop-gap measure to fit into, and to smooth out lines, for those clothes that fit a little closer to the body. If you've worn Under Armour style compression shirts expect this to fit a little tighter, and be a little thicker.
