Nice leggings but trying to get the size right

Read about these in a fashion book and decided to give them a try. I sized up per reviews and got a Large. I am a size 8 and about 5'5". They were a little big and long, so I am going to give the Mediums a shot. Really nice quality and thickness -- perfect for winter in the northeast!

The pros of these leggings: comfortable and you can't see through them. The cons: I bought the black, and after a few washes the color faded and they look like I've had them for years (not too happy about this for the price of these leggings). Also, at 5'2 and usually a small in pants (4/6), I couldn't even get the small over my hips, so I then bought the medium. The medium is a little too loose to be a control top, and the length is a little long for me and the fabric bunches at the ankles.

I usually wear an 18 in pants and the XL fits great. A bit snug going on over the hips and pooch, but OMG, they are so comfortable, once on! And they are long enough, don't creep up and hold in my tummy. I want these in every color! Now, if only I could find coordinating tops/tunics for each color, I'd be set for life...
