Absolutely gorgeous but a burden to wear because of the weight

I was excited to pick up a pair of McTavish Wingtips because of the great, rich Cognac color and intricate broguing; they're eye-catching and absolutely stunning. I tried on several different sizes at a store, with the help of a salesman, and finally decided on the 9.5 EEE - purposefully wider than what I'm used to so as to not cause a collision between my pinkie toes and the sides of the shoe. I wore them for several months and dealt with their onerous weight - always conscious of them and stomping as I walked. Eventually I decided enough was enough and they now they sit in my closet never to be worn again. It's hard to imagine a narrower shoe being significantly lighter, so, if you're planning to be on your feet significantly, this probably isn't the shoe for you.

Seriously great shoe.

Recently purchased my first pair of Allen Edmonds shoes -- the Mctavish in crackle leather (on clearance, no less). The shoes have met my expectations and then some. The crackle leather is tremendous, although they look somewhat darker in person. The shoe is a seriously solid piece of work, very high quality. Note that mine definitely took a few wearings to break in, but they now feel more comfortable with each wearing. As others have noting, this shoe seems to run wide -- I ordered a size down (9E instead of 9EEE) and the fit is spot on. Overall, I am happy with the shoe.

Good looking shoes. i always like the good quality looking style and the details and the materials used in AE shoes. However, after about 10 months light use, the heel fell off completely I intended to be life time AE fan, but these shoes make me concerned about AE shoes' quality. .

When you first put on this shoe, the double oak sole feels like wood. Then it breaks in, and gives more support than any other leather soles out there, and outwears rubber. My MacTavish's are the battle tested work horse in my closet and get worn at least twice a week. When they are clean, they can dress up with a suit or slacks, when they are dirty, khaki's or jeans. My pair are at least a year or so old, and the character of the leather is excellent. They have aged quite well.
I went with the natural leather, but may go cognac next.
