Nice looking with a possible design flaw
PostedDecember 18, 2013
I bought one pair in May and another in July of 2013. They look good, however there is an apparent design flaw. Over time, a bump has developed toward the front of the insoles, behind the big toe in the left shoe of one pair, and in a more central location and toward the front of the insole in the left shoe of the second pair. I understand that a cork bed is located beneath the insole and molds to the feet over a period of time.
Perhaps the cork bed redistributes itself due to the weight placed on it and the movement of the shoe during walking. Maybe, the redistribution of the cork causes a bump to form beneath an area of the insole where the pressure from my foot is lowest. The bump is noticeable and feels awkward.
I would be interested to hear if this issue occurs occasionally with Allen Edmonds shoes. I also wear Alden, Churchs and Cole Haan and have never encountered this issue with these brands.

Great shoe
PostedNovember 29, 2013
This was my very first pair od AEs. I've had them for about 6 months now and they get better with each wear. It only took about 2 wears before they really felt like comfy. The distressed look makes them look awesome. I've worn them with jeans and khakis. This pair of shoes helped me make the decision on the next pair I've purchased and the pair I'm going to buy tomorrow!

Impressed and greatful

I am an American craftsman and I wanted shoes made by an American craftsman. That's how I found AE. Jumping to the end of the story.... They look great, they feel great, the fit & finish makes me VERY happy. I feel as though a kindred spirit built my shoes.
Thank you.
PS - I walked in to the new New York store in old sweat pants and a hoodie. I was never the less received warmly and well cared for despite my stark contrast from the other customers. That's when I bought my two pairs of McTavishes. I can't wait to go back. I gotta try those Football looking things.... :-)

Very well crafted casual shoes, but fitting is a challenge
PostedNovember 5, 2013
I purchased the Grey McTavish during their September clearance sale online as it was sold at an irresistible price. I ordered my usual 5 Last size, which is a 8.5EEE (typically a 9W or 9E on other brands), as my other shoes include the 5th Ave and Strand in multiple colors and they all fit perfectly.
When they arrived I was happy with the quality of how they were built and the rough leather used was perfect for a casual shoe for jeans. The double oak sole looks extremely durable and I felt the broguing was very well done, worthy of a first quality shoe from AE.
Now for the fitting part; initially I thought because of the double oak sole they were extra stiff so some heel slip would be expected as I broke these in. So I went ahead and got taps installed by my local cobbler as I thought nothing of it since all my other 5 last shoes have fit in this size. However, after half a dozen wears with thicker athletic socks and fitting them with some shoe tongues, it still fits slightly large with 1cm of heel slip play. I'd attribute this the softer upper leather used, but if you compared them to a size 10M shoe on other brands of similar style, they're probably just as long. 1.5 sizes in length off seems kind of crazy to me. I probably could go a half size down to a 8EEE, but I worry it might get extremely snug on the vamps.
It's probably my fault for not more extensively checking that these fit properly before using them as I would normally on any other shoe, so my final rating still reflects that this is a good shoe. Everyone just needs to be aware that these will fit large and it's probably best to try them first before you buy.
