Love the uppers, question the soles
PostedFebruary 12, 2013
These shoes have style and I love wearing them. Have received multiple compliments and definitely my favorite pair of brogues when comparing to Church's and Alden.
The bad part are the soles are wearing through a bit quick. I've only had them for a couple of months and wear once or twice a week making sure to use shoe trees and giving them 24 hours rest between wearings. I thought with the double sole they'd last a while, but the sole is already getting soft in the middle. The toe is through the first layer and the I've almost cut through the rubber layer in the heal.
Style wise these shoes are excellent, but even a mid-tier single layer sole from the cobbler will outmatch the ones that come on these.

Great Style - Unforgivingly uncomfortable
PostedFebruary 4, 2013
I've had these shoes for several months now. I was looking for a quality shoe to begin my professional life and spotted the McTavish's. The shoes are undoubtedly stylish, wonderfully crafted, and of the highest quality.
However, the shoes are absolutely unforgiving on the feet. It feels as if there is absolutely no insole or slightest bit of padding inside the shoe. In fact, when I tap on the heel from the inside, I can hear the sound of hollowness from wood. These shoes have caused me endless blisters. I thought I needed to just "break" them in, but after months of wearing them, I can honestly no longer wear these shoes because of the pain they cause me. In fact, I can only wear these shoes once a week because the thought of dealing with that kind of pain more than once a week is unbearable.
I don't want to give up on AE shoes just yet. In fact, I did buy Neumoks recently which I absolutely love and highly recommend. They have all of the positives of the McTavish's and are incredibly comfortable.
Perhaps my pair of McTavish's were defective and made without any type of insole, I don't know, but I can't imagine anyone being comfortable in these shoes.

Not worth the money: terrible fit
PostedFebruary 2, 2013
I was terribly excited about my first Allen Edmonds purchase. After weeks of research and careful consideration, I purchased a pair of McTavish shoes on Madison Ave in NYC. In the store, the shoes fit like a glove, which prompted me to snatch them up.
Unfortunately, wearing these shoes for 2 minutes in-store does not give you a comprehensive feel for what it's like to wear the shoes for 6-8hrs a day, including walking on pavement in the city.
The first two weeks gave me blisters, chaffing and pain in the soles of my feet. I thought that over time the shoes would break in and soften up. 3 months later, that has not happened.
I continue to wear the shoes because the look is amazing (lots of compliments and they really do look great with just about everything I own). However, I must say that they are perhaps the most uncomfortable shoes I have owned.
Without any exaggeration, I feel like I'm walking in two hollowed out bricks. These shoes are extremely heavy, stiff and unforgiving on pavement. They absolutely destroy my feet! I have a hard blister on the top of my little toe that seems to be permanent.
Be cautious with the McTavish. Not sure if this is the story for all Edmonds shoes, but I will definitely be trying another brand (such as Alden) for my next big shoe purchase.

An excellent shoe with a few problems.
PostedFebruary 1, 2013
I recently purchased a pair of Mctavish's in the smokey grey distressed leather. The colour and texture of the leather were very different from your typical dress shoe, however they look fantastic in a more casual setting. I am sure they will hold up for many years thanks to the double sole and the substantial quality of the leather.
The stitching and the construction of the shoe seems absolutely on par with my other pairs of AE's. The last seems to run slightly large. By way of comparison I wear a 10.5 EEE in the Macneil longwing, whereas I was able to fit into a 10 EEE with no issues in the Mctavish. Trying on a 10.5 and my foot felt like it was swimming. The fit is slightly trimmer, which is to the shoe's benefit.
My only issue is that the footbed in the right shoe feels uneven under the ball of the foot, leaving my foot sore after prolonged wear. This may be an issue of breaking the shoe in (as stated I have an exceptionally wide foot).
The footbed issue aside (which is suspect is individual to my pair) the shoes are excellent and a worthy purchase.
