Great looking shoe, sizing way off.

I ordered the McTavish in black with the offset brown stitching. They are a great looking pair of shoes that are very different than your traditional style of dress shoe. The black ones can be worn with nicer business casual (e.g. slacks and a nice button up shirt) and even with a grey, black, or blue suit. They are not overly formal, but enough to look good. The brown may work with jeans, but the black may not be that great. I wouldn't wear them with jeans. Also, I don't think this is a young man's look overall, but could still fit nicely in a mid-level to executive businessman's wardrobe.
Important note on sizing; I normally wear a size 11 in other brands, and in running shoes. I knew these were supposed to run a bit big so I ordered a 10.5. Wow, they were still too big. So I returned and got a 10 and they fit much better. Order a full size smaller than normal. As always, the customer service at AE for the return was great. (I buy over the internet.)
A small thing to think of is that you are supposed to use saddle soap on these and not black polish. The black polish would ruin the offset stitching color.
The Lamar belt is made to match these and goes along nicely. However, the belt is 38mm wide, not 35mm, so it is a bit wide for a dress belt in my mind. Although I think it is meant to be more casaul.
Overall, a great shoe, but expensive. However, you get what you pay for and I expect to be wearing this pair for 10+ years.

Stitching Quality is Terrible
PostedApril 30, 2012
I'll start on a positive note: the styling is great. The shoes fit very well from the start; the fit was even better after the shoes had some time to mold to my feet. However, that doesn't amount to anything when the stitching pops after six weeks. Instead of a long drawn out story, I will give this warning: if you are going to buy any Allen Edmonds, look over the stitching with a fine tooth comb before you buy. If there are any loose ends, hand them back to the sales person. This quality problem is not isolated to the McTavish; I also had to reject a pair of the McAllister.

Sturdy and Stand-out

Great shoes. Just got them. The leather sole is amazingly thick! These will last for YEARS before I need to have them recrafted. The uppers are nice thick leather too with beautiful brogueing. Glad I picked these out!
Look good with just about any pair of pants. I would not wear these with a suit though due to their more rugged /thick look. Great for the city.

A Good-looking, Versatile Black Shoe
PostedMarch 24, 2012
The McTavish fills a spot in my wardrobe. The black shoes I already have are a bit too formal for everyday wear. But the McTavish is not too formal and it's not too casual. I find it works well with suits, all the way down to jeans (but not shorts, of course). Comfortable too.
