Another great Allen Edmonds shoe
PostedMarch 1, 2012
I just got the tan McTavish. I have been considering this shoe since they released it but never bought it. My local store had them in stock and suggested I try them on and I was sold. Luckily I was wearing some twill slacks in a medium olive color as these shoes looked great with them. Seeing them with this less formal attire sold me.
I can't see myself wearing these with a suit (although I'm sure some do and enjoy the look). However, these shoes are going to be worn with just about everything else I have. With the color/texture/styling, these will work with jeans, cords, twills, tweeds, etc. To me, they are the perfect fit for today's "dressed down" world where suits are not as prevalent.
Be sure to try them on before you buy - I wear a 9.5D in 95% of the AE shoes I have - including other shoes on the 5 last. However, the 9D was the perfect fit for me in the McTavish (side note, I also went with a 9D in the Black Hills).
Another great shoe from AE. I find myself wearing suits less often and the McTavish is going to go well with much of my more casual wardrobe.

Awesome looks.... but sizing is way off
PostedFebruary 16, 2012
First off, this shoe has simply great looks and is very well made. Great for a business casual environment. The brown stiching and reddish sole on the black leather is a really sharp look. I thought they looked great on-line and was really impressed at how nice they look in person. These are my second pair of AE's and both have been exceptionally well made.
However, be very sure to read through all of these reviews carefully regarding the sizing. It is in my opinion that these run 1/2 to 1 size large. I've always worn an 11 in many brands and my first pair of AE's. I went with a 10.5 in these and after a few wearings (and them loosening up a little), I've found them to be too big. I should have went with a 10. My advice is buy from a retailer and have them order in 2-3 sizes to try on. That way you don't end up with a great looking pair of shoes with a disappointing fit.

This is my fifth AE shoe, I have the Fifth Avenue, Wilbert, Lubbock and Carlsbad. Of all of them, I think this is my favorite one.
The fit is a little long, I usually wear a 10 D, but 9 1/2 D fit perfectly! To me, this shoe required very little break in time, extremely comfortable right out of the box, but I can only imagine that it will become more comfortable with the more wear it gets.
I opted for the tan as I think it simply looks brilliant and majestic. You can wear this shoe with jeans, cords, khakis or a linen suit and it will look fabulous. It's not a super dressy shoe, but it isn't intended to be that either. If you are thinking about buying this shoe, pull the trigger, you won't regret it.

Great Look but Poor Fit
PostedFebruary 13, 2012
I've worn a solid 10 in almost everything for my entire adult life. I understand that there are occasional needs to go down a half size with certain shoes. I tried the 10 in the McTavish, which was too big then ordered a size 9.5, which is also too long, and much tighter than the 10. The shoes looks are near perfect, but the poor sizing, and last used to make the shoe ruin it, making it tolerable only to those with extremely long, narrow feet as the last suggests. I'm not confident that a 9 would fit any better -- the 9.5 literally hurt while seated in a chair. That kind of fit on a guy that has worn a consistent size 10 across dozens of different brands for as long as I have just isn't right. It's a shame.
