Great "country brogue".
PostedDecember 30, 2011
I am thrilled with my purchase of the McTavish in Black. My journey for a "country brogue" like shoe (i.e. the shoe has a double or triple sole, storm welt, more pronounced brogue styling, etc...) initially had me looking for shoes in the United Kingdom. I was looking at Tricker's Bourton, Alfred Sargent Appleby and the Loake Ashby. I do admire the styles from all the British shoe company's in Northamptonshire, England. In fact, I own a pair of Alfred Sargent monk style shoes. I also have a great pair of double-monk shoes from Spain. Because of my prior experience with the UK & Spain, I really have overlooked Allen-Edmonds. I just associated them with purely business/board room shoe styles which I appreciate but which is not my style.
So I ordered a pair of Alfred Sargent Appleby's. I carefully assessed the sizes as return shipping is very expensive. Well, I received them and appreciated their excellent quality. Yet, when I tried them on (even though the size was right) they just didn't feel right and I thought these UK "country brogue" styled shoes were perhaps a bit too exaggerated in their style. So I sent them back ($$$). This experience discouraged me from trying on another UK pair. I wasn't sure where to look next. Then the other day I decided to visit the Allen-Edmonds retail store down the street from my work place.
That's when I noticed their Rough Collection, especially the McTavish in black with it's contrast stitching and chili colored soles. This was what I was looking for, just blocks from my office versus thousands of miles away. I also admired the Natural version and can see buying these soon.
After trying on the McTavish black I was hooked on Allen-Edmonds. I feel the Rough Collection offers some of the key elements of a "country brogue" , e.g. double leather sole, storm welt, enhanced brogue style, yet they are not as "over the top" as the UK shoes I was looking at. In fact, I feel one could also wear the McTavish black with a suit. So I believe they are more versatile.
I also started doing more research on Allen-Edmonds (reviews, history, video) and I have to say, compared to the UK manufacturers, and other shoe companies around the World, Allen-Edmonds really has their act together. They really know how to socialize their quality and great customer experience. I also really feel their ReCrafting service greatly differentiates them from most of their competition.
I really hope they continue making quality shoes, and continue to venture into new styles like the Rough Collection, but at the same time keeping quality a high priority. I anticipate a long-term relationship with Allen-Edmonds. Just keep the quality high, the customer experience excellent, the prices fair and the shoes made in the USA.

Best pair yet...

I have owned Allen Edmonds in nearly every style, but the company was always missing this crossover type of brogue (I have the natural, which feel like a baseball glove on your feet). These are, by far, the nicest pair of shoes I have ever purchased. The fit is right and the look is distinctive. I have received more compliments on these shoes than on any other pair I have ever owned.

Absolutely Outstanding Product

Wow! My first pair of AE's and I could not be more impressed. I highly recommend an in-store fitting opposed to guessing online. I normally wear size 10.5 and ultimately purchased 9.5. Purchased for my wedding and cannot wait to show them off.
-Thanks AE

A Fantastic Pair of Shoes!
PostedDecember 9, 2011
I purchased this pair of McTavish at the Madison Avenue store, New York City, soon after having bought a pair of Elgins there. I love both pair for not only their very good looks, but because of their comfortable fit. These shoes go so well with both dress and casual wear. I love them with jeans! They are among the best shoes that I have ever owned. Most of my shoes are Allen Edmonds. They are the best!
