Disappointing Shoe

I gave 2 stars because I love the look, however after 5 months of 2x/week wearing I can tell you this is the least comfortable of all my AE shoes. Further, the heel on the right shoe is peeling off and needs to be repaired.

This is also my second pair of patriots. The first pair had a very squeaky counter. I will say that customer service was exceptional and replaced it (after a couple weeks due to backorders).

I'm honestly debating whether a repair is worth it. I hate to give a bad review because this is the first pair of AE's that I have ever been unhappy with, but there you have it.

Pains me to say this....

I've worn Edmonds loafers and oxfords since 2006. That's all, aside from the occaasional snow boot or running shoe. Anyway, I bought the Patriot loafers this January while back in the states visiting family (I'm a us diplomat based abroad; don't get me startd on how/why AE can't seem to send shoes to APOs or DPOs). Anyway, when i saw the patriot, i thought it looked great, had good lines. Bought it. Later I was perplexed over how the patriot squeaks like a cheap shoe, just so bad. So loud. Really. People comment about it. AE did something weird with the heel construction, that's where the squeak comes from. And the narrowness is bad. I bought an E, though this didn't really help. I wear a D in the waldens and kenwoods.

I usually don't write reviews, especially negative ones for companies I typically support fully...but.....I hope to god they aren't going cheap on us.

I gave these two months; time to toss them. Sad.

Quality and Fit Issues

I always have trouble finding a pair of loafers that fit me. Therefore, I was especially excited when I found out that AE introduced a new last, with a roomier forefoot (which is what I need). Without hesitation, I purchased the Patriot. When I received my first pair, I was very impressed with the quality. They also fit comfortably with a short break-in period. However, within a few weeks, my right shoe started to squeak in the heel area. When I contacted AE, I was told to send them back for inspection. I was then contacted by AE that a new pair would be sent to me. I was at the time very happy with the customer service provided.

What followed was frustration. I first received a pair with wrinkles on the leather (not creases, but wrinkles). I again sent those in for replacement. I then received a pair that was uneven on the sides. Once again, AE replaced them with another pair. At that point, I was surprised at how they got through quality inspection, since the cosmetic imperfection would have made them seconds.

Finally I received my last/current pair. They are beautiful cosmetically. However, when I first put them on, they felt tight compared to the first pair. Based on my experience with my first pair (that fit comfortably), I thought they would eventually break in (since they are the same size after all). However, after 3~4 times of extended wearing, they remain uncomfortable. Needless to say, I am disappointed with my Patriots. In this case, it does seem like the variation in sizing is larger than I thought. At this point, I am not sure if they will eventually break in if I continue to wear them.

Beautiful and stylish loafers

The Patriot design is really fantastic (much better than a well-known competitor). They are so beautiful loafers that I have bought them in burgandy, dark brown, and black calf.

These loafers are versatile, suitable to wear with suits, chinos, or jeans.

They are eventually a little bit shorter than the Park Avenue, with a short breaking time (normally I take an 8.5 D, I was obliged to change for a 9 D, but even for the Park Avenue I have now changed my size).
