Beautiful Shoe ... runs longer than other 5-65 last shoes!
PostedSeptember 3, 2012
Let me start off with the fact that I am an 11 EEE, have been a loyal AE consumer for a decade, have over 15 pairs of AE shoes from a variety of lasts, and have 6 more pairs on the way. I purchased both the cognac and orange Ridgeway and the Black and Red a few months back when they were available as WebGems ... both pairs struck me as being gorgeous and refreshing when compared to previous AE styles. I know that last reviewer was not a fan of the orange leather, however, this shoe was built for a different age bracket and individual ... Personally, I love the colors that these shoes offer, especially the Orange and the Red. With that being said, why the "Average" rating? Both of these shoes run long, much longer than I had anticipated. Even at a EEE width, I probably could have gone with a size smaller and they would have fit well. Additionally, these shoes walk hard, if that makes sense. Thought the width is very comfortable, there is a hardness around the balls of the feet that make these shoes feel as if they're lined with concrete instead of cork and leather. Both pairs of these shoes kill my soles, which is a first for any of my AE shoes. I'm not sure if this is a result of the weird lug soles that are provided, which are also not very well sculptured or made. I've only had these shoes for a few months and the lugs are already worn away, but to be fair, there wasn't much of a sculptured lug sole to begin with. The material used to create this sole also feels very hard as opposed to a Vibram rubber lug sole. It feels more like plastic than rubber, which may be the cause of the hardness across the balls of the feet. Regardless, this shoe would feel more comfortable if either a. AE stuck with all leather or B. gave it a rubber lug sole as opposed to this odd plastic/leather hybrid.
In any event, these shoes are gorgeous, in my humble opinion, and the overall quality is fantastic. Just keep in mind that if you are looking to buy these and you have other 5-65 last shoes, move down a half size or even a whole size. I would probably suggest a half a size for those with E-EEE widths and a whole size if you're foot runs narrow. Also, wear cushioned socks with these to help take the edge off the soles. Again, I love the shoes, I just wish the soles were more comfortable and that it was far more true to size.
