Bursting with character with a bewitching color
PostedSeptember 27, 2016
My pair of the McAllister is in merlot, which is a closeout color, as it's been replaced by oxblood. Either way, I think a burgundy tone is the perfect color to showcase the ornate and intricate design of the shoe. (Bourbon would have been great were it still available, walnut is too - although many people will have a walnut Strand and the walnut McAllister is a very similar shoe to that).
The merlot is a particularly fascinating shade, as it really does look markedly different depending on the lighting. When I first took my pair out of the box, it was gray and overcast outside and I couldn't see any red at all in the shoe - it just looked like a purple color. But sunlight really brings out the deep, rich crimson.
I find the McAllister very comfortable. It's an extremely versatile shoe, because the closed lacing make it appropriate for wearing formally, but the full brogue design gives it a playful side that makes it appropriate for more casual occasions, too. For that reason, I don't think black is the best color for the shoe, as it will then lean towards the formal side and not be as versatile. It's too bad that the McAllister is no longer available with a combination tap sole unless you pay the surcharge.
Be aware that the '5 last is long and narrow, so you may want to size down and go up a width from your Brannock size. I'm somewhere in between a 10.5 and an 11 and a C and a D, and got these in 10.5D, and they fit well.
Some may think that a downside to the McAllister is that it has an "overlapping wingtip," which means that the two sets of brogue holes running down the front of the shoe touch each other, rather than there being a small space in between. The more traditional design for a short-wingtip would be to leave an inch or so of plain leather in between the wing coming down from the toe medallion and the wing coming forward from the lacing. You can see such a gap on rival designs such as the Loake Buckingham. But I think that the overlapping wings work on the McAllister. They add to the "busy-ness" of the shoe but you have to buy into that if you want to enjoy the McAllister, anyway.

My new favorite shoes!

These Mcallister Wingtips are easily the most comfortable, beautiful, high quality shoes I have ever owned. These are my third pair of Allen Edmonds shoes and I will not look elsewhere for my high end shoe needs ever again.

After moderate wear, these shoes still feel and look amazing. I'd recommend walnut McAllisters to any fashion savvy individuals.

Great Looking Wingtips
PostedJuly 15, 2016
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the most comfortable pair of dress shoes I've owned. They are fairly expensive, but in my opinion the quality and fact that they are made in the USA makes them worth it. Absolutely love the wingtip look and have encountered no problems with the shoes after finding my size for this last.
